Grey September



Looking back on that grey September
As tempers flared high and crashed,
Crashed into a thousand lone embers.
The air is chilled as subtle breaths appear
And like devious pirouetting ghosts,
They usher in red autumn this year.
Greens to red, dull yellows, then brown
Colors fade away like the ocean’s tide
Leaving all their memories on the ground.

Looking back on that old September
As I throw the sash across my shoulder
I carry with me more than I should remember
Like the leaves, and how it was to hold her.
I choose a path through the hollowed branches
Take no glance back nor shed a single tear
And walk lulled by the footstep beat trances
Eager for autumn’s cold gifts this year.

Thinking back I start to see.
More fragments of the old me.
How the wind scattered them ‘round.
And summer storms beat me down.
The way September was a ruse.
And how it left me missing.
Missing me… missing you.
